Compassionate, Evidence-Based Support Through Loss

Grief can make the world feel unfamiliar

After the death of someone you love, even the simplest parts of daily life can feel overwhelming. Whether your loss was expected after a long illness, sudden and unexpected, or the result of a traumatic event or suicide, grief can leave you feeling exhausted, disconnected, and unsure how to move forward.

At OCD Wellness, we provide compassionate, evidence-based grief counselling to support individuals experiencing bereavement, traumatic grief, and complicated grief. Our role is not to take away your grief—we couldn't, because grief reflects the love and connection you shared. Instead, we help you process your loss, develop healthy ways of coping, and find a path forward while continuing to honour the person you've lost.

Understanding Your Grief

Grief Looks Different for Everyone

There is no right or wrong way to grieve.

Every loss is unique, and every person's experience is shaped by many factors, including their relationship with the person who died, how the death occurred, previous experiences with loss, and the support available to them.

Grief can bring waves of sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, numbness, disbelief, or even moments of relief. These reactions are all part of the human experience of loss. Healing does not follow a timeline, and there is no expectation that you should "move on" by a certain date.

When to Seek Grief Support

When Grief Feels Too Heavy to Carry Alone

While grief is a natural response to loss, there are times when additional support can make a meaningful difference.

You may benefit from grief counselling if you:

  • Feel stuck in your grief and unable to move forward.
  • Experience intrusive or distressing memories surrounding the death.
  • Avoid reminders of your loved one because they feel overwhelming.
  • Feel hopeless or as though life has permanently lost its meaning.
  • Find it difficult to manage work, relationships, or daily responsibilities.
  • Turn to alcohol, substances, overworking, or other behaviours to escape painful emotions.
  • Are grieving a sudden, traumatic, or violent death, including suicide.

Sometimes people cope by staying busy, returning to work immediately, or focusing on everyone else's needs. While these responses can appear strong, they may also be ways of avoiding the painful emotions that need time and space to be processed. When grief remains unprocessed, it can continue to affect emotional wellbeing long after the loss.

A Safe Space to Heal

How Grief Counselling Can Help

Grief counselling offers a safe, supportive space to share your story, process painful emotions, and make sense of your experience without judgment or pressure.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include:

  • Supportive Grief Counselling to explore your relationship with your loved one, process emotions, and navigate life after loss.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories surrounding the death.
  • Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy for individuals experiencing traumatic grief or significant avoidance of painful memories.
  • Expressive Arts Therapy to help process emotions and honour your loved one's memory through creative expression when words alone feel insufficient.

Our work together is guided by evidence-based approaches while remaining deeply compassionate and tailored to your individual experience.

Living with Loss

Healing Doesn't Mean Forgetting

The goal of grief therapy is not to erase your pain or help you "get over" someone you love.

Healing means learning to carry your grief differently.

Together, we work toward accepting the reality of the loss, processing difficult emotions, finding meaning in your loved one's life and legacy, and rebuilding a life that continues to honour both your relationship with them and your own future.

The love you have for someone does not end when they die. With time and support, the intensity of grief can soften, allowing space for hope, connection, and moments of joy to return.

Service Questions

Common Questions About Grief Counselling

  • How do I know if I need grief counselling?

Grief counselling may be helpful if your loss feels overwhelming, you're struggling to cope with daily life, experiencing intense or persistent emotions, avoiding reminders of your loved one, or finding it difficult to move forward. Counselling provides a safe space to process your grief and develop healthy ways of coping at your own pace.

  • Is there a right or wrong way to grieve?

No. Grief is a deeply personal experience, and everyone grieves differently. Your response to loss may be influenced by your relationship with the person who died, the circumstances of the death, your past experiences, and the support available to you. There is no "normal" timeline for grief, and healing looks different for everyone.

  • What types of therapy are used in grief counselling?

Depending on your individual needs, grief counselling may include supportive talk therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for traumatic memories, Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy for traumatic grief and avoidance, or Expressive Arts Therapy to help process emotions through creative expression. Your treatment is tailored to your unique experience and goals.

  • Can grief counselling help after a sudden or traumatic death?

Yes. Grief counselling can be especially beneficial following a sudden, traumatic, or unexpected death, including suicide. Evidence-based therapies such as EMDR and Prolonged Exposure Therapy can help reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories while supporting you through the grieving process with compassion and care.
